Normal cold-weather behavior
A heat pump may run longer than a furnace and periodically enter defrost mode. Brief steam outdoors can be normal during defrost; thick ice that remains or indoor comfort loss is not.
Auxiliary heat and thermostat settings
Auxiliary heat can support the system during low temperatures or recovery from a large setback. Frequent or continuous auxiliary operation may justify a controls and performance check.
Keep the system unobstructed
Maintain safe clearance around outdoor equipment and keep snow, leaves, and roof runoff from restricting airflow. Never use sharp tools or hot water to remove ice.
